Visiting Charleston this week. Even with the gentrification of large parts of the city in high gear, the existing cobblestone streets, antebellum houses, French Quarter and Battery districts still retain their unique charm and beauty. Although not a part of the earliest single family homes, later buildings had 2 and even 3 story porches (known locally as piazzas). These piazzas were located on the south or west side of the house to take advantage of cooling local winds.
